I am a UK-qualified Solicitor specialising in publishing, with 30 years’ experience of advising publishers, writers, literary agents and others involved in the publishing industry.

For the last 10 years, I have been a one-person firm — BM Nyman & Co — based in North London.

Typical work includes:

  • Drafting and negotiating all types of publishing contracts;
  • Pre-publication advice on defamation;
  • Advising on Intellectual Property (particularly copyright, trade marks and confidentiality) and drafting and negotiating contracts (including licenses and assignments) of Intellectual Property;
  • IT contracts (e.g. software contracts, web hosting, website terms and conditions and privacy policies.

I am the author of a specialist section on the publishing industry in Copinger and Skone James on Copyrightand (the leading practitioners’ work on UK copyright) and the author of the section on copyright in the Encyclopaedia of Forms and Precedents.

Please see contact details below and visit my website for more information about what I do, what I can do for you or to make an appointment.

This blog will be a place for reporting, discussing and seeking comments on legal issues relating to publishing — and anything else which happens to be on the mind of those who read or contribute to this blog. I will be looking at things primarily from a UK law point of view, but will be happy to receive comments from outside the UK, as this will help generate an international perspective.
